The NIBE/EWH annual national design competition is introduced to enable Nigerian
undergraduates and postgraduates in the field of biomedical engineering and technology as well
as the allied sciences to appreciate first hand needs of the health care of Nigeria and those of other developing countries.
The competition is organised by the Nigerian Institute for Biomedical Engineering (NIBE) for its
Students Wing in consonance with the Engineering World Health (EWH), USA. Therefore,
in addition to the prices to be won, the first three designs that emerge from this national competition
shall represent Nigeria and enter for the international competition of the Engineering World Health
in the USA in the competition year following.

Aims and Objectives
* To develop technical solutions that contribute to improved health care in Nigeria and other
developing countries of the world
* To promote biomedical engineering and technology to the student who are the budding professionals
* To provide opportunities for students to learn about natural and global health issues and problem
identification, develop design, communication and teamwork skills, and learn about other cultures
* To encourage and strengthen the Students Wing of the NABET as an EWH chapter and its continuity
* To promote public-private partnerships in biomedical engineering and technology design for
Nigeria and the developing world and expose students to industry discipline and approaches
Rules
* The competition is entered in as a team of not less than two students and not more than ten members in a team
* Each competing Team must have at least one biomedical engineering and technology student
who is a member of the NIBE and an adviser who is a practicing professional or faculty from
biomedical engineering and technology department or departments allied to biomedical
engineering or technology.
Design Proposal
Each team must submit a proposal for a design project that has an impact on improving health
care in Nigeria and other developing countries. The proposal should include a clear problem
definition for the design project and an explanation of the positive impact the proposed solution
can have in Nigeria and other developing countries. The proposal should not exceed two pages.
NIBE reserves the right to approve or disapprove of any proposal.

Completed Design Competition Registration Form should be accompanied by the Design Proposal and sent by email attachment to: infostudents@nigerianbme.org
Alternatively, the proposal can be done online by completing the Online Registration Form and attaching the written proposal in the form.
Final Design Submission
A written submission of the design is required, which will be evaluated by an expert panel of
NIBE/EWH Design Competition Organising Committee (DCOC), and the top three placing Design Teams
in addition to being awarded cash prizes shall represent Nigeria and enter for the international
competition of the Engineering World Health in the USA in the competition year following.
Each Design Team must submit a finished design by the deadline and submitted design must
be for a proposed design that was approved by NIBE. Therefore, the design team, whose proposal has been accepted
should have a functioning prototype at the time of final submission.
